Artist of the Month--Yvonne Shukovsky
Yvonne characterizes her work by "the marriage of found objects, painted passages, and paper scraps." She used corrugated cardboard, newspapers, old hymnal books, handmade and oriental papers, torn watercolors, charred papers, photographs and magazine images. In order to create her intricate collages, she employs a process of tearing, arranging, rearranging, and adhering materials. Yvonne says, "I consider the process more intuitive than intellectual and I love to incorporate disparate elements that show the effects of time on our earthly and spiritual values."
She has exhibited widely in the greater Boston area, New Hampshire and various national competitions. Her pieces can be found in many private collections nationally and internationally. She is a juried member of the New England Watercolor Society, a distinguished artist of the Concord Art Association (Mass) as well as the New Hampshire Women's Caucus for the Arts and various art associations.
Yvonne attended the Ohio University-School of Fine Arts, Boston University, B.A. and the Decordova Museum School in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Klara Calitri was born in Vienna, Austria and came to the U.S. in 1939. She came to Vermont to attend Trinity College and fell in love with the people, the mountains, and Lake Champlain. She began a teaching career at Columbia and the College of the City of N.Y. She taught French, German and Spanish in the public schools in New York and worked as a professional artist. Klara has devoted herself to art full time since 1980. She works in ceramics, oils, pastels, and has been influenced by her childhood in Vienna and Impressionism. Our exhibit is in honor of the Quadricentennial of Samual de Champlain's exploration of Lake Champlain. U.S. Senator, Patrick Leahy of Vermont owns Klara's works and one resides on his website!

Who is the Artist in our Gallery?
Helen's serigraphs are each an original and handprinted. Only one color is printed at a time, and a separate screen is required for each color! She draws her inspirations not only from the changing seasons, but also by the diversity of the landscape in Vermont.

An Event for a Worthy Undertaking!
Twenty-Six volunteers helped turn a dream into reality on the morning of June 6 at the first annual Ottauquechee Trail Day. Sheila Armen, Sharon Taylor,Linda Fisher and John Taylor of the Upper Valley Trails Alliance led the group. With the aid of a pickup truck, a mini dump truck and a tractor, pushing wheelbarrows, dragging large buckets, the group managed to mulch almost the entire first leg of the trail which begins at the entrance to the Polo Field and runs through the front lawn of the Quechee Inn. The Covered Bridge Half Marathon prevented the Polo Field section from being completed until after the race and the group ran out of time, if not energy, before a section through the woods and the Quechee Inn property could be completed.
Signs are posted and the first leg is ready for walkers and runners. The workers then were served a well deserved lunch on the terrace of the Quechee Inn thanks to the generosity of the inn and Innkeepers Mary and Rick Trahan. Dave Clark provided live music.
FOOT also wants to thank John Taylor of the Upper Valley Trails Alliance for his support, hard work and generosity and acknowledge the donations from members and the Covered Bridge Half Marathon and funding by the Ottauquechee Health Foundation. And it was anice afternoon for a well-earned nap!
We love to help out!
See you soon!

History of the Quechee Inn at Marshland Farms
Colonel Joseph Marsh, born in 1726 in Connecticut moved to "New Connecticut" as Vermont was known in 1772. He became lieutenant-colonel and then colonel of a Vermont regiment in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. His Northern or Upper regiment of Cumberland County was sent to relieve the soldiers after the Battle of Bennington. Marsh himself is said to have escorted some soldiers to Fort No. 4 in nearby Charlestown, New Hampshire.
He became a member of the Vermont State Convention in 1777. Soon after, he became Lieutenant Governor and served in the State General Assembly for 10 years. The house was built on land close to the Ottauquechee River. Some called it the "Baronial Mansion", but Colonel Marsh simply called it Marshland.
Marsh married Dorothy Mason in 1750 and the couple had 11 children, including James who became the president of the University of Vermont. His grandson George would be one of the founders of the Smithsonian Institution. Colonel Joseph Marsh died in 1811.
